There were memories - and illusions - involved, though. That glass that has shared our memories throughout the week was used to see these 'hellbound' in their true forms.

I thought that he was infected - and had it not been for Yuri's quick actions and the help of one of the locals in the catacombs, the creature may well have killed me. They're creatures that are burnt beyond all measure - by the same great calamity that the locals here spoke of. We saw some of the creature's memory, and it was a miserable thing. Desperately seeking out angels, who they all believed were the ones to bring on the calamity in the first place.
... People who were turned into creatures that conjure illusions to harm others, thanks to the calamity. It is a powerful ability it can tap into an individual's fears. Be more careful next time.

Tyrant... no, I don't think so, but there was a lot of fury against the angels. We came across a chamber when we were down there, covered in graffiti. "The earth bleeds when angels lie - clip their wings - the looking glass knows - tear them down - can't burn away the truth". Things along those lines.

And...honestly, I am not sure. They all saw the Angels as calamitous, though, so - perhaps they were the ones who brought the great fire down upon the people who lived here before.
