Well... it took away his willpower, which - I think that is directly tied to the human soul. That, and the spectres were particularly attempting to get to San Lang when I was in there, even more so than myself. And both San Lang and Qi Rong's daemon were terrified of them. Plus, this connection that we have to these creatures...it just makes me think that perhaps they are intrinsically a part of us, is all. In my realm, we might consider it something close to a spiritual weapon.
Spiritual powers - in my realm, it is common for people to cultivate their qi, their spiritual energy. It is the energy that flows through the body and the planet, through the Heavens and the Hells - what makes up all things. It is usually cultivated alongside practices of martial arts, and is a skill that takes time to develop and master. With the proper training, you can utilize that energy for all sorts of things - not only for fighting - but, I often used it to fight demons and ghosts and the like, paired with my swordsmanship and martial arts skills.
[ absently, he touches his fingers against the bandage he wears around his neck. ] It is a highly useful tool.
This sounds a lot like... [He takes out his notebook and quickly flips to a page to check. This guy's been taking notes on everything, apparently.] Ah, there it is. I heard a young lady speak about "cultivators"... People who fight "evil spirits" and the like.
Is this what that title refers to? The "cultivation" of qi?

I see... I have noticed strange similarities like that, as well. My Suresne supposedly sounds a lot like what others call 'French.' I believe the victim, Mr. Pontmercy, spoke it.

A-Qing said so many things that sounded familiar to me, but in reality, her world is entirely different from mine. As if they exist alongside each other - the same, but different. I suppose that has been one of the better things about being in such a strange place, that we've been able to experience so many cultures so very different than ours.
