xie lian is out at the beach, sitting crosslegged in the sand. he's been back to change clothes - his white robes are pristine - and he's holding what appears to be a few small sheets of paper in his hands.
there is a small fire burning in front of him, flickering light across the beach, and he is slowly dipping each of the papers into the fire, until they burn to ashes, saying something soft under his breath. he glances up, noticing someone else - and then offers a soft smile, nodding his head. ] Hello, Miss Monika.
[So glad the evidence magic did their laundry for them. She offers him a small smile in return, taking a few steps closer with her hands clasped behind her back, and her eyes flicker towards the fire. Hm.]
... I hope I'm not interrupting anything. Do you need a moment?
I'm quite alright. I was making offerings for Mr. Marius's soul - in hopes of helping guide him along to the afterlife. It is quite common for people to burn paper money after someone has passed away, but... I couldn't find any, so, I had to make do.
[ he smiles up at her after, though, gentle. ] It's nice out here, isn't it? Far calmer than anything else we've experienced today.
Quietly, she pulls out a notebook and doodles something on both sides of it with a red pen. When she's done, she rips out the page and tears it in half along the middle before presenting it to him. He might not recognize the type of currency, but they're two hastily drawn bills. Wowie. Paper money.]
Ahaha, it is nice. Getting some fresh air is just what we need after... you know, that. It got really noisy toward the end.
xie lian has been hunting for the missing person like just about everyone else, and - spotting monika, he offers her a little smile and a bow of his head. san lang, a ferret up on his shoulder, also bows. ]
Hello, Miss Monika. [ gentle as ever. ] No blood this time, at least. [ thank you qi rong ]
So we do. [ with a smile! san lang chitters, friendly if completely unintelligible. ] Being able to converse with everyone last night made things a bit less stressful, I think - and, certainly, seeing everyone this morning was a relief.
...Even still, I had hoped it would be the same for everyone, and that seems not to be the case. [ poor nine... ]
[She may or may not be gently traumatized after the blood incident. It's fine.]
Yeah... To be honest, I think we were all trying to distract ourselves from what was happening. But it was such a relief to see everyone again in the morning. [A sigh.] ... I feel sorry for him. Did no one see him last night? At all?
[ yea it be like that sometimes. xie lian, again, is sorry for his garbage family.
he lifts a hand up to pet san lang absently as the topic of nine comes up properly, and thinks, brow furrowing. ]
I'm not sure. [ mm... ] ...It was much the same as Mr. Marius, if that was the case. It is best that we should not find ourselves alone on these Thursday evenings, I think.
...And much like last week, I want to find out who would have done such a thing. Perhaps we will be able to get more answers from them, whoever they are. [ than you know. qi rong. ] There must be a reason of some kind.
Actually, I was thinking... Since we keep running into each other when the doors lock, do you want to make a habit out of it from now on? Ulrika said she wanted to stay with me next week, too, and I think it's a good idea make plans with at least two other people as often as possible. That way, if one of us doesn't show up, the other two will know something's up and can vouch for each other in case there's no one else around.
[She pauses for a second, as if to gauge his reaction.]
... It's just a thought, so you don't have to say yes if you have other plans. [And then, she shrugs.] Anyway, I know we're technically in a competition, but... Is that too simple?
[ buddy system!!!! he nods to this suggestion, lighting up a little. ]
I think that is a wonderful idea. And to make plans with two, as well, is very clever, Miss Monika.
[ smart girl!!! and then - for the competition bit, that brighter warmth on his face does die down, as he looks away from her for a moment, hand coming to his chin, thoughtful. san lang chitters unhappily. ]
... I don't think it is too simple, no. This sort of competition has been described as something between two 'warring families' to me, by one of the Watchers. Qi Rong... is not the type to act only with some sort of incentive, and if he had one, he certainly didn't tell anyone, so he is an outlier... at least, I think.
But... perhaps whatever happened last night will provide some clarity. I do not know which 'side' Nine was on, but if we can find out perhaps what side the person who killed him was on, we may find some more proof for such a theory.
It is troubling, that that is the nature of such a thing. [ that thoughtful look shifts again, to a frown. ] ...Violence does not solve violence.
[ after the execution, xie lian is in the courtyard of the castle, practicing what look to be sword forms, in a whirl of brown hair and white silk. he's breathing harder than he should be - it seems he's been at this for a while, if the slightly pink splotches at his chest of an injury that isn't quite healed under his bandages aren't another indication.
his blade is in his hand, since there's no one around. fang xin is pitch black and seems to absorb the light of the bioluminescent plants around it with each swing - san lang, a qilin, dodges out of xie lian's way, leaping past the point of each strike in a graceful dance, back and forth.
after a moment of this, though, san lang notices the presence of another, and makes a noise - xie lian turns, too, and gently plants the tip of his blade in the ground. ]
Monika has likely been here for a short while, watching him do his thing with a sense of awe. It's not every day you get to see someone move so gracefully, after all — even if it's only a practice. Though when he notices her, she offers him a sheepish smile in return.]
Hey, Xie Lian. Are you... [She trails off as she seems to notice something, her eyes lowering to his chest, and she gasps. Beside her, Pygmalion (currently chilling as a fox), raises his hackles.] ... Oh, my gosh! What happened to your chest?
[Sir!!! She's so shocked, she marches right over to take a better look, fretting.]
Seriously, how forgetful can you be? Weren't you in pain or something? Jeez... [Why is he this way.] I haven't used my supplies yet. So let's change your bandages.
[ this icon is so valid. he looks properly and well scolded, shoulders hunching, and nods. ]
...To be honest with you, normally, I don't really feel these sorts of things. [ pain, anyway. but he will nod and shuffle off wherever monika wants him to go to get this done. ] Even things like eating and sleeping are still new...
[ he shakes his head! at least he is very pliant to being fussed over. ]
No- it was like that a bit before I came, but even then. [ …sheepishly: ] … the first week we were here, I passed out because I forgot to eat until Friday. Mister Nero and Mister Diluc brought me some food. [ …. ] … and then, last week, Thursday was the first time I slept in a few days….
[On this lovely Monday morning, Xie Lian will run into Monika while she's crouched by the edge of the canals. She's staring at the water with a hand gently skimming the surface, her mouth moving as she quietly sings something under her breath, the words impossible to make out. Pygmalion, on the other hand, is currently chilling in the canal itself — taking the opportunity to preen as a swan does.
It seems like they're both pretty caught up in what they're doing, but not enough that Monika fails to notice the presence of another.]
—Huh? [She stops singing, turning her head to look at him.] Oh. Hi, Xie Lian! This is pretty cool, right?
[She preens a bit at the compliment, before her expression shifts to something more somber.]
From what I've heard, they both think the other side is dangerous and a risk to the worlds around them. Maybe... they really think that totally obliterating the other side is their only way out. Kill or be killed, you know?
[ oh, it is a nice sight! specifically, the sound of the singing is very pretty - xie lian smiles as he approaches, and then bows, polite. san lang does the same, skittering to xie lian's shoulder to bow along with him, and then hopping down to the edge of the canal and streeeetching out towards pygmalion. ]
It is very lovely. I'm sorry, Miss Monika, I did not mean to interrupt or spy - you have a very pretty singing voice, as well.
For a brief moment, Monika's eyes widen like she's realized she said something she shouldn't have. But then the moment passes, and she forces herself to relax, averting her gaze.]
... She's, like, the sweetest girl I've ever met. All she wanted to do was be there for other people. She loved making everyone happy, you know? But, ehehe... She wasn't that good at taking care of herself, so... [A shrug.] You totally got her beat on forgetfulness, though!
xie lian smiles a little at that, though. he likes to hear stories about the lives of others - these little things always make him happy - and he tucks his hands gently in his lap. ]
She sounds like a wonderful person. And one quite lucky, to have a considerate friend such as you, Miss Monika.
[ as ever, xie lian's tone is gentle and accepting - and genuine, too. warm. ]
